What is a professional?

April 20, 2012

What does it mean to be a professional? Susan Klein nailed it in a recent article:

“It is a matter of doing one’s best work every time – no exceptions. Required are integrity, diligence, hard work… constant improvement of one’s art….

For those with such an honorable reputation, the work of maintaining it does not cease…ever.”

There it is – right between the eyes: just when you want to slack off, or you’re tired, or you feel you’ve reached a certain level of skill and proficiency and can relax a bit… let things slide a little. As long as our art is led by people like Susan, we’re in good shape.

We have such giants in the field of professional storytelling: Susan, Jay O’Callahan, Donald Davis, Syd Lieberman, Connie Regan-Blake, Elizabeth Ellis, and many, many others. How incredibly lucky we are to be able to listen to and learn from them!
